How We’re Allies of the LGBTQ+ Community

I’m an ally to the community by acknowledging we are not a monolith. The LGBTQ+ Community is diverse, and the ways we express and experience our identities are very individual. Because of this I know it is wrong to expect others in the community to express themselves the way I do or be as open as I am. – Adam Saraswati Rawlings

I am an ally by recognising my own privilege within the community and passing the microphone to other underrepresented LGBTQ+ voices. As a large and diverse community, it is endlessly important to show support for one another and to feel respected by people like you. – Robyn Hill

I am an ally to the LGBTQ+ community by respecting and using people’s correct pronouns. If I am unsure, I always ask. I can sometimes feel shy to seek clarification but I believe that a small step such as this can go a long way to helping someone feel seen, respected and comfortable. – Anna Scott

I’m an ally to the LGBTQ+ community by attempting to create a safe place for gay christians in my church and community by starting a university society and refusing membership at my home church till everyone can become a member, regardless of sexuality.-Daisy Edwards

I’m an ally to the LGBTQ+ Community by being a decent person and doing the basics too many people still do not do, like respecting people’s feelings and individualities, encouraging diversity, advocating for human rights, and voting to politicians who foster gender equality. – Carla Mendonça

I’m an ally to the LGBTQ+ community by promoting and advocating for equality regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, and religion, and including those who identify with a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth in discussions on gender equality, women’s rights, and toxic masculinity, which traditionally tend to be a “women versus men” debate.- Valeria Camerino

As a hetereosexual woman, I admit today and every day, especially in the country I live, that I have the privilege to marry the one I love. Personally, I cannot sit with that privilege and ignore the injustices my friends of the LGBTQIA+ community face. To be an ally is more than just changing your display picture or business logo to a rainbow; to be an ally you have to take the steps, as hard and risky as it may be, to raise the voices of the unheard and the silenced. I am an ally by standing up with and for the LGBTQIA+ community, by acknowledging my privilege as a cis woman and by changing the narrative in my very Islamic family. – Kabeerah Khan

I am an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community by recognising how intersectional all of our identities are, and by listening to my peers whose queerness is different from my own. Actionis so important, but you can’t act until you’ve listened. – Meg Edwards

I am an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community by contributing to creating a safe space for anyone and by ensuring equal respect and acknowledgement for their individual identities. I am a sister and a friend to anyone and everyone who needs me. I am an ally because I want to provide my support, listen and take action to advocate equal opportunities for the LGBTQIA+ community. – Victoria  Arul

I’m an ally because I believe that all people regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation should be treated with dignity and respect. I’m also aware that just because I’m part of the community doesn’t make me exempt from being an ally as well. That’s why I’ve created this section – to share this platform with other members of the community. The fight won’t end until discrimination ends. – Ellie
